“Eveline” , “Never a Dull Moment”

Eveline, built in 1911 in Shanghai, is very probably Asia’s oldest Western style sailing yacht. Her survival through the tumultuous history of the last century is a tribute to the affection her many owners have had for her.

Based in Malaysia since the mid 1950s and flying the burgees of Malaysia’s Royal Selangor Yacht Club and UK’s Royal Ocean Racing Club and British Classic Yacht Club, she is owned in partnership between H.R.H. Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Sultan of Selangor, a keen round the world yachtsman and Royal Patron of Royal Selangor Yacht Club and of the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta and Dato’ Richard Curtis, a Malaysian-resident businessman and former Commodore of Malaysia’s Royal Selangor Yacht Club.

Eveline is a well known yacht in South East Asia, being regularly cruised, chartered out  and raced in Malaysian, Thai and Singaporean waters, where her distinctive dark blue hull, spoon bow, counter stem stern and classic gaff rig make her stand out from the crowd.

Her history has been extensively researched involving visits to archives in UK, Shanghai, Singapore and Malaysia as well as materials passed on by former owners. Gaps still remain but enough has been found to show what a colourful life, reflecting East Asia’s economic and political development, she has enjoyed and still enjoys.

Visitors to this site are invited to contact us should they have any materials or information that could add to our knowledge of this much loved yacht’s colourful history.
